The Illinois Valley Central Lady Ghosts started a tough week Jan. 30 by falling to Limestone, 62-43, at home.

“That was a good team game for us,” coach Paul Mercer said. “Everybody hustled. We just didn’t have it in the second half as far as scoring.”

The Rockets took charge of the game from the beginning and established a 21-13 lead after the opening frame.

Jenna Noland kept IVC in the game by blasting past defenders to score near the hoop as well as snatching rebounds for the Ghosts.

The Rockets could not be stopped in the first half and continued to knock down shot after shot to establish a 34-25 lead at halftime.

Limestone again racked up 21 points in the third quarter by popping shots over Ghost defenders and spreading the ball around the court to get open looks at the hoop.

Despite falling into a deep hole against the Rockets, the team never stopped hustling and held to the Rockets to seven points in the final frame as Limestone went on to win.

The team then took down Peoria Christian at home, 61-56, Jan. 31.

“We played box-and-one,” Mercer said. “The girls did a real good job. We knew that we could get the ball inside to our post players and we did a very good job of doing that.”

The Ghosts jumped out to a great start in the first quarter with Noland charging to the hoop to help charge the Ghost offense.

Emma Hoerr got in on the action and led the team with 23 points during the game.

“We had great scoring during the start of the game,” Mercer said.

The team continued to pour it on in the second quarter and added strong defense to keep the Chargers from sparking their own offense.

At halftime, IVC led 35-21.

In the third quarter, the Charger offense woke and began to mount a comeback by knocking down shot after shot.

The Ghost offense did not have the same spark as it did in the first half and let Peoria Christian cut the lead to 46-42.

In the pivotal final quarter, the Ghosts and Chargers matched each other shot for shot, with neither side able to shut the other down.

IVC, however, barely outscored the Chargers to win.

The team hosted Annawan Thursday for senior night and lost, 60-41.

“Annawan has an excellent team,” Mercer said. “They are ranked first in 1A. We did a good job of playing with them. They have only lost one game all year.”

Before the game, the team honored the senior class of Hoerr, Noland, Hannah Johnson, Shae Schmick, McKenzie Schroeder and Jessica Thomas.

“We have a very good senior class,” Mercer said. “Our seniors did a very good job this year as far as trying to get the team up and motivated. They kept things upbeat in practice and helped the younger girls get the experience they need to win in the future.”

The team struggled out of the gates and Annawan established a quick lead.

The Ghost defense could not keep up with the Annawan offense in the first half as well as causing too many turnovers on offense.

IVC was trailing, 37-19, at halftime.

In the third quarter, Brooke Rudolph helped the Ghost offense rejuvenate by moving the ball around and knocking down shots when she had the chance.

IVC, however, could not claw its way out of the hole and lost the final home game of the year.

The sixth-seeded Ghosts were scheduled to play the third-seeded Stark County (Toulon) Monday in the Stark County Regional.

“We have to play like we played against Peoria Christian,” Mercer said. “Stark County is a very physical team that attacks you all the time inside.”
