Some Civic Achievement Award winners in years past are lured to the Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet to receive their award for service to the city.

That was the case for Tim Berger of Tim and Shelly’s 2nd Street Bar & Grill Friday night.

What is not the same this year is his method of transportation — a Chillicothe police squad car.

Mayor Troy Childers Sr. said Berger was told he needed to answer a question for the mayor at the banquet.

To facilitate that, Childers earlier had checked with police officials to see if all was quiet in town — and then Berger traveled via a squad car from his business at the corner of Second and Chestnut streets to Pearce Community Center.

Friday night is a busy time at the restaurant with its seafood special, Childers said. “We thought if we could get him in and out to receive the award, that’d be good.”

Once Berger arrived and sat down at a table, Childers began talking about Berger and his business. He and his wife, Shelly, have hosted numerous events to help raise thousands of dollars for a variety of groups, from the Boy Scouts to the Chillicothe Optimist Club’s down payment for Town Theatre.

During the IVC Band Bash, the Illinois Valley Central Marching Grey Ghosts raised money for new uniforms.

The Bergers also raised funds for Christmas stockings to be handed out to local children during the lighting of the Christmas tree after the annual Santa Claus Parade.

“Tim and Shelly’s has always bent over backwards to help,” said Childers. “If there’s a cause, they’ll help.

The Bergers were a unanimous pick from the Chillicothe City Council, Childers said, of the award in which the aldermen vote for the winner. Some discussion occurred previously about if it is a person or a business who receive the award.

According to the award criteria, the city’s highest award is to be given to an individual(s) of the business community who “step out and perform a measure of service that exemplifies quality of civic pride and responsibility.”

In this case, Tim and Shelly Berger spearhead the causes that come their way through their restaurant.

While the fundraisers helped many younger residents, Childers said he has noted when he has been in the restaurant how they treat the senior citizens.

“It seems like they take special care of the elderly in there, and that makes me especially proud,” said Childers. “They don’t do it in a phoney way, they really care. We’re glad to have them in Chillicothe.”

What residents used to call Bailey’s Pub at 1046 N. Second St. has been known as Tim & Shelly’s since September 2008.

While Tim tries to stay behind the scenes, in cases like this, as well as the Chillicothe Optimist Club awarding the Bergers its 2010 “Friend of Youth” award, he and his wife’s care for the community come center stage.
