The seven Ghost wrestlers who qualified for Sectional, Riley Beard, Chase Dietrich, Reece Smith, Jesse Hall, Brendan Butler, Jake Innis and Kyle Walden, wrestled in the Macomb Sectional Friday and Saturday with Beard and Butler advancing to State.
“The kids wrestled really well at Sectionals,” coach Matt Russell said.
Freshman Beard earned a bye in the first round of the 113-pound division and advanced to the semi-finals with a close, 12-10 decision.
“Riley had a great tournament,” Russell said. “He lost in the semi-finals but everyone else he beat in convincing fashion.”
In the semi-finals, Beard’s opponent barely nudged him out in a 6-4 decision.
Beard’s first match of the consolation bracket saw him winning an 11-3 decision.
Beard earned a spot at State when he won third-place on a quick 1:22 pin.
Senior Butler came out on the losing side of a 5-1 decision in his first match of the 182-pound division.
“Brendan had a really good tournament,” Russell said.
Butler then won a major decision, 14-1, in his first match of the consolation bracket.
Butler then took down his next foe on a 2-0 decision to enter the semi-finals.
Butler earned a spot in the third-place match when he took his opponent down in an 8-0 decision in the semi-finals.
In the third-place match, Butler blanked his opponent with an 8-0 decision to stamp his ticket to State.
Chase Dietrich fell in the first match of the 145-pound division when he was pinned in 1:20.
Dietrich’s season ended when he came out on the losing end of a 5-1 decision in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In the 160-pound division, Reece Smith fell in the first bout on an 8-3 decision.
Smith dominated his first foe in the consolation bracket to win on a 7-2 decision.
Smith fell in the next match on an 8-2 decision to end the season.
In the 170-pound division, Hall lost his first bout on a tough 6-4 decision but bounced back by pinning his first foe in the consolation bracket in 4:56.
Hall took his next opponent down on a speedy 1:34 pin.
Hall’s season ended one match later when he fell in a tough 10-3 decision.
Innis won a major decision to start his climb through the 195-pound division but then lost an 8-4 decision to enter the consolation bracket.
Innis made short work of his next foe with a 0:54 pin and followed it with a 2:25 pin.

Beard and Butler will wrestle Thursday at Assembly Hall in Champaign with times to be announced.
Tickets are $8 or $10 per session or $40 or $50 for a season ticket for all sessions.
“Both guys need to win their first match and they have a great chance to medal,” Russell said. “We will have to wrestle hard in practice this week to stay sharp for State.”
