The boys basketball team opened up play at the Collinsville High School Schnucks Holiday Classic with a loss to No. 4 seeded McCluer North, 62-37.
The game started off with a dunk by McCluer North’s Jordon Granger, and only went downhill from there.
The Eagles went down early, 17-4, in the first quarter, and saw the gap increase to 31-12 by halftime.
At one point in the second quarter, McCluer had a 21-4 advantage over Dunlap after a scoring drought which started with 3:39 left in the first.
Two free throws by Ryan Merkley finally stopped the scoring drought, making it 21-6.
Six of the eight points in the second came off free throws.
The score difference stretched to as much as 32 points in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles finished with a seven point run to close the gap.
Overall, the Eagles gave up 27 points off turnovers and 17 second chance points. Dunlap had 24 points in the paint.
Drew Angevine led the team with 16 points, while Sam VanDenAvond added eight. VanDenAvond also had a team-high six rebounds and two blocks.
No players scored a 3-pointer.
The Eagles suffered another loss the next day against Lincoln, 34-24.
After being held to only two points in the first quarter, the Eagles could never recover, scoring just eight in the second and fourth quarters.
The game is the lowest scoring game in the history of the tournament.
Gosnell led the team with six points, while VanDenAvond and Merkley added four.
The Eagles attempted a total of 27 shots, 11 of which were from outside the arc.
Lincoln had 14 points come from Jordan Gesner.
Dunlap outrebounded the Railsplitters, 21-14.
The Eagles picked up a win Friday against Oakville, 55-49.
