Students in Illinois Valley Central School District 321 can expect to see an increase in fees when they start the 2010-11 school year.

In an attempt to counter the district’s projected deficit, the board unanimously approved an increase in cost for lunches, registration and athletics/activities.

Superintendent Dr. Nick Polyak said administration looked at what 15 area districts charge for such fees and made adjustments accordingly.

“Even though we are increasing fees, we’re still well below the rest of the area districts,” he said.
“We’re just making necessary changes.”

Lunch prices will increase from $1.40 to $1.75 for grades K-4, from $1.45 to $1.75 for 5-8 and from $1.50 to $1.95 for 9-12.

Adults in the district will see a boost from $2 to $2.50. Polyak said these prices have not been increased since the early 2000s. Current prices are about 40 to 54 cents less than the 15-district average.

Registration fees will jump from $40 to $50 for K-8 and from $65 to $75 for 9-12. The other district averages for these fees are $55.67 and $77.50, respectively.

Athletic and activity fees for 5-8 will move up from $12.50 to $20 and 9-12 from $20 to $40.

Other districts are at about $44.50 for 5-8 and $57.14 for 9-12. Illinois Valley Central District 321 has not changed these fees since the late ‘80s.

In other action and discussion, the board:

• heard a construction update for South School by Polyak. Crews are getting ready to fill the block faces and hang dry wall. They are also testing water pipe systems for leaks.

• approved the 2010-11 school calendar. Polyak said issues arose because Christmas will fall on a Saturday and because Easter is “about as late as it can possibly be in the year.”

The last day of the first semester is Dec. 22, with classes resuming Jan. 10. This will create a balance between semesters with 87 days in the first semester and 88 in the second.

Spring break is April 18 to April 22.

• discussed kindergarten registration, which will be March 26 for both Mossville and South School.

• approved the use of the facilities and transportation for Project Graduation.

“This is an opportunity to provide a safe and alcohol-free activity for our kids,” said Polyak.

• approved the retirement of Sharon Mudd, copy clerk at Chillicothe Elementary Center.

• approved the resignation of Ashley Brewer, special education teacher, and Barb Wolter, special education aide, both at CEC.

• approved Alex Razo taking the head baseball position at Chillicothe Junior High and Kevin Yates to step up as eighth grade boys basketball coach. These positions are currently held by Marty Ogburn, who will soon retire.

• recognized IVC wrestler, Jared Lauber, who represented the Ghosts at State.
