Ethan Streitmatter has lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was 16 months old.
His mother, Amanda Streitmatter, a Dunlap resident, has been involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since his diagnosis.
Streitmatter is hosting Golfing Fore a Cure 2010 Sept. 10 at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Washington.
All proceeds go toward JDRF.
Teams or individuals can sign up for the golf outing.
“I think right now we’ve got nine or 10 teams and 10 or 15 coming in with verbal confirmations,” Streitmatter said. “We have people who are just coming for the dinner.”
Streitmatter helps promote the event, solicits golfers, donors and hole sponsors and gets companies to donate prizes for the winners and items for a silent auction.
Streitmatter has put the golf outing together with the help of Jennifer VandeWiele, who also has a son with Type 1 diabetes.
“We figure out what they’re going to have for dinner and do a program during the dinner to explain why they’re here and a slide show of our boys which talks about diabetes,” Streitmatter said.
Registration for Golfing Fore a Cure is accepted up until noon the day of the event. The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m.
Teams of four cost $340, while a single golfer needs $90. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Hole sponsors are $200, putting green sponsors are $300 and a beverage cart sponsor is $400.
Streitmatter also fundraises for different JDRF events throughout the year.
“Our family does the golf outing, we’re doing ‘A Night in Paris,’ which is the dinner and that’s going be Sept. 25, — so that’s another way if they’re not a golfer and want to come have dinner — and then just the letter we send out to all our friends and family.
“We have people that will take our letter and send it out to their friends and it just ends up getting passed around. A lot of the time we get donations from people we don’t know, who have seen the letter which is kind of neat,” Streitmatter said.
“My dad has a restaurant here in town, and he has a donation jar and we have paper sneakers and people can put their name up and donate. We’ll do little contests for whoever can sell the most sneakers.”
Along with the golf outing, there is a Walk for the Cure Oct. 3 at Glen Oak Park.
“The walk is basically a celebration for all these families and anyone that supports (the cause) comes together to celebrate their efforts dealing with diabetes on a day to day basis.
“Families are there, friends, churches, celebrating taking care of someone who has the disease, the fundraising efforts they’ve done, the educational efforts they’ve done and that kind of thing,” Streitmatter said.
Last year, through all three events, they raised $25,000 for JDRF. The goal this year is $30,000.
