Illinois Valley Central High School senior Josh Pilger is continuing his battle with cancer, and residents are not letting his fight be forgotten.

Volunteers gathered Sunday to tie green ribbons along as many poles on main streets in Chillicothe as they could.

Green represents the color for lymphoma and is also said to be the 17-year-old’s favorite color. He was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a non-Hodgkins cancer of the lymph nodes.

Hand-tied bows accented his home, which includes green Christmas lights. Another bow is at Chillicothe City Hall.

To brighten his days at the hospital, his family is requesting residents send Christmas cards to cheer him on.

Recently he began a high dose of chemotherapy, but the drugs were not shrinking his tumor. Doctors then, after consulting with Pilger and his family, gave him a different regimen of chemotherapy Monday.

Residents may send Christmas cards to OSF Children’s Hospital, St. Jude, Josh Pilger, Room 406, Peoria, IL 61637.
