As the weather continues to warm this spring, residents want to spend more time outside.
For owners of golf carts, the Chillicothe Police Department is reminding them to secure their permits to allow their carts on the streets this year.
Applications are available at the CPD, 823 N. Second St.
Golf cart owners are required to apply for a permit by providing their name, address, phone number and driver’s license number; insurance carrier and policy number; golf cart serial number, make, model and description; and the names and addresses of additional operators of the cart.
Carts may operate only during daylight hours. Drivers must be at least 18 years old, and the cart must have a city permit decal displayed.
Once signing a waiver of liability and paying the annual permit fee of $25, owners are required to have a thorough golf cart inspection by a CPD officer before using the cart.
Officers will check brakes, steering apparatus, tires, rearview mirror, red reflector warning in front and rear, slow moving emblem on the rear, headlights emitting white light visible from 500 feet, taillights emitting red light visible from 100 feet, brake lights and turn signals.
Golf carts are required to obey a speed limit of 20 mph, not to exceed 25 mph.
In addition, carts must cross the highway at a traffic light or four-way stop only.
