A Chillicothe man severely lacerated a leg while fishing alone Sunday morning on the Illinois River.

The boat, piloted by Austin Griggs, 29, got stuck on a submerged levy shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday in the backwaters east of the Illinois River channel north of Chillicothe, according to the Illinois State Conservation Police.

Griggs, who was wearing a life vest, slipped while getting into the water to try to free the boat and severely cut his left thigh.

He was taken off the river by Chillicothe Fire and Rescue and taken by ambulance to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he underwent surgery Sunday afternoon. He was discharged Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
