The Chillicothe City Council meeting Jan. 23 was literally short and sweet.

With three items on the agenda, the council made fairly good time for their work.

Add to that it was Economic Development Director Rachael Parker’s first council meeting, and she brought her goodies for officials to sample.

In the near future she is opening a Peoria storefront for her home-based business, Sweet Cakes by Rachael.

Discussion at the council meeting included Alderman Mel Witte bringing up that at least a couple residents who drive semi-trucks are parking the cabs in front of their homes. When they do that, he said, the cab breaks up the sides of the street due to their weight.

Witte asked if there are or should be weight restrictions on city roads.

Judicial Committee Chairman Danny Colwell said City Attorney Mike Seghetti is looking into the issue, but there are state laws which factor into the issue.

Also brought before the council was information about the contest, We Hear You America, by Reader’s Digest.

The magazine is giving away 18 cash prizes, with the top being $50,000, to better cities across the country.
Chillicothe is rising in the numbers at more than 23,000 votes and at number 58 in the contest Thursday afternoon.

Courtney Bickerman and Ausra Rowell of the Chillicothe Independent asked the aldermen if there were any top priorities on which the money could be spent. Rowell suggested the money be spent on the newest area of the
Chillicothe riverfront.

While none of the officials gave ideas there, aldermen will pass their ideas along to Mayor Troy Childers Sr. or Office Manager Denise Passage.

In other items, the council:

• Concurred with the mayoral proclamation of Feb. 11 as Bald Eagle Day in Chillicothe.

• Approved paying AA&L Roofing $3,575 for the final payment of the roof repairs to the city-owned building at 227 Cedar St. The building, formerly occupied by Four Seasons Ace Hardware, is currently leased to Small Engine Specialty.

• Adopted a resolution appropriating $88,000 of Motor Fuel Tax Funds to maintain streets and highway for 2012.
