Garrett Hurd
Address: 1107 N. Fourth St., Chillicothe
Age: 20
Family: Greg Hurd (father), Margaret Hurd (mother), Betsy Hurd (sister)
Job: Server at Happy Thought Coffee/Funeral Assistant at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home
Education: Graduated from IVC in 2009, currently enrolled as a sophomore at ICC
Elective/appointive offices held or leadership roles: While at IVC, I held a number of leadership-type positions such as serving on the Student Council and directing the senior retreat.
School board member’s role: Trustees should help guide the overall direction of the district as well as set goals for it with input from faculty and the community. Trustees should not try to control every aspect of the district, but rather develop policies & approve budgets to further the district’s goals for itself and its students.
Top priorities: The top priority is the continued excellence of education for our students. This means keeping our district financially stable, continuing to offer the variety of classes and activities currently expected in order to prepare our students for the future. Going forward, technology will be a key part of the country’s future and in order to fully prepare our students we must keep our technologies current and have the proper professional development for our educators so they may properly use the new technologies we adopt.
District 321’s greatest challenge: Our district’s greatest challenge currently is operating in a state where funding isn’t certain, as well as having to meet government required guidelines for our students, which are common problems throughout the country today. I hope to assist with that by bringing in the mindset of a student to the board when contemplating ways to meet guidelines and set budgets.
Why residents should vote for you: I think having the perspective of someone who has recently been through our school would bring a good dynamic to our school board. I believe having a relatively recent and up-to-date view of our district from the inside of the classroom will be a good addition to the multiple perspectives of our school board.
