WENONA — Wenona Mayor Zachary J. North was charged Tuesday with drunken driving and two traffic offenses in LaSalle County.

North, 25, was stopped by county deputies at 2:27 a.m. at Illinos Route 251 and North 14th Road, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The intersection is about six miles north of Wenona and near the community of Lostant.

North was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding 70 mph in a 45 mph zone and improper lane usage (driving in the wrong lane), the release said. He was transported to the county jail and was released after posting $100 bail, according to court records.

North did not immediately return a call Wednesday. His first court date was set for April 11.

North was elected a second time last year to the office, which he had originally won in 2013 at the age of 21. He resigned in 2015 to relocate for his job with CSX Railroad, but reclaimed the position by beating former mayor and city manager Bill Simmons in 2017 after a transfer allowed him to return to Wenona.

North had been charged with the misdemeanor of illegal consumption of liquor by a minor in 2009, LaSalle County court records indicate, but that case was closed without prosecution three months later.
