Three Illinois Valley Central High School students were the winners of the Voice of Democracy essay contest and two Mossville Junior High students won the Patriot’s Pen essay contest.

Pat O’Neill of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4999 announced the winners Friday, Nov. 17 during assemblies at IVC and Mossville.

IVC winners were Josalyn Guariglia, who earned first place and a $500 prize, followed by Isaac Peterson in second and a $200 prize and Ashley Horn taking third place and a $100 prize.

This year’s theme for the Voice of Democracy contest was, “American History: Our Hope for the Future.”

The Mossville Patriot’s Pen winners were Brynn Conklin, who earned first place and a $200 prize, followed by Caitlin Westemeyer in second place and a $100 prize.

This year’s theme for the Patriot’s Pen contest was, “America’s Gift to My Generation.”
