The Pekin boys soccer roster is getting thinner.
Beginning the game with two starters out and losing two more with injuries, the Dragons lost 4-1 Wednesday to Metamora in a Mid-Illini Conference contest.
Pekin is down to 20 players on its varsity and junior varsity teams.
Koltin Walters scored the Dragons’ lone goal against Metamora. It came at 34:15 and cut the Redbirds’ lead to 3-1. Pekin goalie Riley Bradshaw had seven saves.
Ian Conger scored twice for Metamora. Redbirds goalie Glenn Mair had 10 saves.
Down to the wire: Score one for the schedule makers.
With both the Mid-Illini and Big 12 conference championships still up for grabs, the final week of the Class 2A/3A regular season could provide fans with one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory.
The two conference races are playing out in very different fashion, though both are working their way toward potentially dramatic conclusions. Four teams remain in the hunt for the Big 12 title, while the Mid-Illini chase has become a two-team competition with one match to play.
With Dunlap and Metamora having fallen off the pace in recent weeks, only defending champ Washington and perennial challenger Morton remain in the hunt for the Mid-Illini title.
Both 5-0-1 in conference competition with draws against Dunlap, the two sides will square off Tuesday in a de facto M-I championship match on the Potters’ home turf at McClallen Park’s Rotary Field.
Despite a Sept. 14 loss to pack leader Normal Community, Notre Dame still has a shot at taking home the Big 12 title.
