Burtnett captured river, Chillicothe history for Bulletin
From the time Bob Burtnett’s columns graced the pages of the Chillicothe Bulletin in December 1952 until December 1975, Burtnett kept Chillicothe residents afloat with memories in his weekly column.
His column, “Along the Riverfront,” featured the Illinois River, and the boats that set sail on it, intertwined with the history of Chillicothe, as well as some time overseas.

Chillicothe Police Chief Steve Maurer, 53, spent Wednesday night in the Peoria County Jail after being arrested on charges of domestic battery and criminal trespass to a residence.

He won an Oscar for his short film, “Two Soldiers,” in 2004.

South School dedication ceremony
The Illinois Valley Central District 321 school board meeting focused on the school year.
But, before the meeting, the board hosted a dedication ceremony for South Primary School.
Peoria County’s Supervisor of Assessments Office is offering its second of two free public workshops on the property assessment process from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Room 402 of the Peoria County Courthouse, 324 Main St.

In the Tazewell County Department of Assessments and Board of Review office, Gary Twist fills the role of Freedom of Information Act officer. It is a role created by the state’s new Freedom of Information Act, which went into effect Jan. 1. Twist, however, is not in compliance with the law.
When asked, Twist admitted he had not completed the state required training on the new Freedom of Information Act and did not have the materials required to be available in plain sight under the act.
But, Twist was not alone.
After asking two weeks ago for residents to submit their ideas of what to do with the riverfront property where the former ADM grain elevator stood, the Chillicothe City Council had yet another piece of business with the property at Monday night’s meeting.
Dr. David Kinney, who retired after the 2008-09 academic year as superintendent of Illinois Valley Central School District 321, will begin the 2010-11 academic year as interim comptroller/treasurer of Peoria District 150.
Kinney’s appointment was approved unanimously Aug. 16 at a special meeting of the District 150 board.
Students are coming back to a freshly painted building, which accentuates a mural embracing the school’s mission statement.
A second group of property owners have entered into a pre-annexation agreement with the village of Dunlap.
At its Wednesday meeting, the Dunlap Village Board unanimously approved an ordinance to establish a second pre-annexation agreement for 12 residents.
Chillicothe-area parents may want to drop by Riverside Chevrolet Saturday to pick up information about keeping their children safe.
If residents are looking for a laid-back Sunday afternoon of fun, they may not want to look any further than downtown Chillicothe for the IVC Band Bash.
“It’s kind of like an appreciation concert,” said IVC director of bands Matt Chapman. “We want to give back to the community and give them a musical treat.”
Ethan Streitmatter has lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was 16 months old.
His mother, Amanda Streitmatter, a Dunlap resident, has been involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since his diagnosis.
Streitmatter is hosting Golfing Fore a Cure 2010 Sept. 10 at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Washington.
THREE EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
1. The fifth annual Farm Heritage Days is in a new location this year, the Stark County Jr. Fairgrounds in Wyoming instead of Three Sisters Park.
2. 3 Sisters Antique Tractor Club hosts the event, which features operating steam engines, antique tractor pulls, raffles and silent auction items.
3. In preparation for the event, club members had their first tractor club drive Sunday from Chillicothe to Wyoming. They picked up club members along the route. They reached the Stark County Jr. Fairgrounds two-and-one-half hours from the beginning of the drive.
St. Edward School in Chillicothe has a new principal for the 2010-11 school year, and he is looking forward to the challenge of continuing to “move the school in the right direction.”
A few Chillicothe residents saw a familiar face poking around the community hunting for antiques.
Frank Fritz of The History Channel’s American Pickers TV show wandered around town without the camera crew in search of goodies recently.
He was without his fellow picker, Mike Wolfe from the show, but had a helper.
Toni Markwalder saw a sign at the Freedom Oil gas station in Rome about Fritz being in the area. She encouraged her husband, Tex, to give him a call. Tex works with Placher Auctions.
Though there has not been a fire for the Chillicothe Fire Department’s new air packs to be put to good use, the equipment is available when needed.
Though the Assistance to Firefighters Grants already was announced a few months ago by U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria), the department recently received the air packs and the funds.
Since Schock was coming to town for his America Speaking Out forum, the firemen took the opportunity to formally thank him for the federal funds.
