Salon’s grand opening now changed to March 20

“I don’t trust anyone who does their own hair. I don’t think it’s natural,” said Truvy (Dolly Parton), owner of Truvy’s Beauty Salon in the movie “Steel Magnolias.”

The thought fits well with Chillicothe’s newest hair salon, Hair Biz, located at 1207 N. Fourth St., which opened Jan. 11.

Hair Biz owner Nicole Fitschen, with help from her mother, Cyndy Eakins, and facials by appointment with esthetician Andra Benson, are followers of Fitschen’s favorite motto, “Looking good is understood.”

“Some people ask what makes us different than the other hair places,” said Eakins. “I think we’re more personable. We understand the economy’s rough right now, and we try to make people feel better when they leave. We want people to feel pretty and satisfied when they leave.

“It’s friendly, homey, and we want everyone to feel like family, to come in and feel comfortable,” she added.

Fitschen, who recently graduated from Oehrlein School of Cosmetology in East Peoria, asked her mother to help her get a start in the new business venture.

With 17 years of hair care under her belt, Eakins agreed. She also graduated from Oehrlein School of Cosmetology.

“I’ve had my license for 17 years and done hair throughout the years and worked at various other jobs to raise my kids,” said Eakins.

As they drove by the Fourth Street site one day and noticed the sign, the duo decided it would be a good location for the business, “and off we went,” said Eakins.

After a brief amount of paperwork, Fitschen and Eakins did a little painting and had some needed electrical work done.

“That’s pretty much all we had to do,” said Eakins. “Now I’m just in here to help out my daughter.”

Eakins is from Lacon, and Fitschen lives in Creve Coeur, but would like to move closer to Chillicothe, where she used to live.

Benson, who also lives in Chillicothe, is a Tricoci University in Peoria graduate, specializing in a wide array of facials, body wraps and waxing.

Hair Biz is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday; and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The business also offers later hours and special times, as well.

Women, men and children, plus walk-ins, are welcome at Hair Biz, where most all beauty treatments and courtesies are available — acrylic nails, manicures, pedicures, hair cuts, color, highlights, foils, facials, waxing, permanents, etc.

Fitschen said they will also go to the homes of people who are handicapped or who are unable to get to the salon.

They also are eager to donate for benefits and other causes for concern in the area.

Through March, Hair Biz offers a $10 haircut special, and Eakins said there would be some kind of special each month.

Also through March, Eakins said, customers can get $5 off perms and color, plus a $25 set of acrylic nails.

April specials also are set. Call the shop for other pricing information or to schedule an appointment at 274-5252.

The original plans included a grand opening Saturday, but Eakins said the date has been changed to 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 20 instead.

“We’ll have specials that day, along with cookies, coffee and hot chocolate,” she said.

“We want a nice friendly salon,” stressed Eakins. “People can just stop in and have a cup of coffee or say hello. Eventually, we’d like to grow. But right now, I’m very thankful it’s doing as well as it’s doing.”

Hair Biz now has two work chairs, with the capability of having four as the need arises.

Customers range from Eakins’ established clientele built up for several years to new people giving the salon a try for the first time.

“When the weather warms up, we’ll set up a couple of tables outside so people can sit out there, too,” said Eakins, adding a hearty laugh.

At age 20, Fitschen is up-to-date on the latest techniques in hair styling, while Eakins is an expert from an earlier school.

“I’m experienced,” said Eakins. “I’ve got things to teach her, and she’s got things to teach me.
We’ve both got something to offer. She’s really good at it. I’d like to learn some of the new stuff she knows.”
