Citizens may view balloon glow in evening
Thousands of hot air balloon lovers and sky gazers from across the Midwest will gather at Three Sisters Park Friday through Sunday to celebrate the Illinois State Championship Hot Air Balloon Race and Festival with three days of live entertainment, balloon workshops, monster truck rides, fireworks and more.
Some Chillicothe residents found an unfamiliar site at the foot of Walnut Street this morning — two replicas of boats used by Christopher Columbus in discovering the New World.
The Niña and the Pinta docked in Chillicothe to pick up members of the media for a three-hour trip to Peoria, where the boats will be in port for the weekend.
Illinois Valley Central High School 2010 graduate Alex Bryant may have found the perfect part — Aladdin.
“People are like, ‘Oh, you kinda look like him.’ I’ve been told that a lot,” he said.
With a successful Claud-Elen Days pet parade this year, organizers plan to support a bigger and better event next year.

$8,000 needed
It may not seem like that time of summer already, but the Fourth of July is fastly approaching.
The Chillicothe 4th of July Committee is making preparations for this year’s fireworks show, but a lack of funding leaves the show short about $8,000, according to chairman Steve Maurer.

For the first time in 33 years, Dan Dietrich will not be working or performing for a parade. Instead he will be taking a ride through one in his wife’s convertible.
The 2009-10 school year marks the retirement of the longtime Illinois Valley Central High School Band Director, and with his retirement, the end of an era for the school.
From the moment Judy McColl stole her first flower from the garden club president’s yard at 5 years old and was chased from the yard, she knew that one day she wanted a garden of her own.
“I love flowers. I always have,” McColl said.
A sea of tents and trailers decked with posters, flags and handwritten sonnets overflowed the dirt paths and fields of Three Sisters Park Memorial Day weekend as more than 10,000 music lovers from across the country ascended on Chillicothe Memorial Day weekend for the 10th annual Summer Camp festival.
One prom ticket – $35, a dress or tux – $200, beauty and accessories – $50.
A night full of memories?
Not exactly priceless, but for most area students, the cost is worth it in the end.
Recently, prom committees from four area schools — East Peoria, Morton,
Washington and Illinois Valley Central — answered questions about the cost of prom.

To raise funds for CrossWord Café, Love-In-Action food pantry and Small World Connections, a rummage sale is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Now that May has finally arrived, Claud-Elen Days is just around the corner.
This year’s event, themed “The Music Man,” is June 9-12.

Volunteers always welcome to join Shademakers group
If the guest list and the amount of freebies are any indication, the annual Arbor Day celebration is blossoming into lots of fun for the children attending.
The event starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chillicothe Public Library. All children are welcome.
New seats clear customs, now on way
Town Theatre remains open for business and looking the same, right now, that is.
Originally, volunteers planned to begin renovations Sunday to the theater now owned by the Chillicothe Optimist Club.
With the new 256 seats not arriving yet, plans were set back one week.
