The IVC varsity wrestling team traveled to East Peoria with Central Jan. 21 and received two losses. On Saturday, the wrestlers traveled to LeRoy for the Randy Bowman Invitational to earn seventh place. At East Peoria Against East Peoria, IVC was defeated 61-7. Nick Norris won by a 7-2 decision in the 106-lbs. division and Jordan Ladd earned a win in the 195-lbs. division, 9-0, for IVC’s two wins. Against Central, the Grey Ghosts received another loss at 59-19 but had four grapplers capture wins. Norris had a pin at 2:26. In the 132-lbs. division, Riley Beard won by a 7-4 decision. Ladd won by a 10-0 decision and Nick Jennings had a pin at 3:52. At LeRoy The IVC wrestlers grappled their way to seventh place out of 16 other teams at the invite. “It was a good tournament. We had a few champs,” said coach Matt Russell. Norris earned first place in the 106 after pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals and a 3-2 decision in the championship round over Trevor Bulington of LeRoy. Beard earned his championship after a pin in the quarterfinals at 38 seconds and a 9-3 decision in the semifinals. In the championship round, he defeated state-ranked No. 4 in 1A Garrett Brachbill of Shelbyville with an 8-4 decision. “(Beard) was probably in the toughest bracket in there. There were a couple state ranked kids and he wrestled real well again,” said Russell. Nic Ransom grappled his way to fifth place in the 132-lbs. division after a 7-1 loss in the quarterfinals and was sent to the consolation bracket. Ransom defeated Jarred Hicks of Shelbyville with a pin at 3:28 in his final bout. Derek Meeks earned sixth place in the 145-lbs. division after a 4-3 win over Zach Schaidle of Eureka in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. He was pinned at 5:48 in the fifth-place round by Hoa Bobe of Lawrenceville. Chase Dietrich finished in fourth place in the 170-lbs. division after a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals over Geoffrey Miller of Eureka but was defeated in the semifinals and, again, in the third-place round from a pin at 1:18 by Jarod Noel of Bismarck Henning. For second place, Ladd wrestled his way to the championship round after pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. He faced Terry White of Port Byron-Riverdale for the championship but was pinned with one second left at 5:59. “It was 2-2. (Ladd) tried something that didn’t work for him and got himself pinned,” said Russell. IVC will wrestle in Macomb Thursday. If the Grey Ghosts beat Macomb then IVC will have won the West Central Conference title.
