The IVC boys varsity basketball team started its action in the 35th State Farm Holiday Classic Thursday against Olympia with a 54-39 win. “In this tournament, especially in the first game of this tournament, you just want to survive and advance,” said coach Joe Mintus. The Grey Ghosts opened the scoring for the game with a 2-point field goal under the basket by senior Reilly Owens but the Spartans Drew Stribling answered right back with a 3-pointer to give Olympia its only lead of the game. IVC put up a quick eight points from two 3’s by junior Mason Schaub and a layup by Owens before Olympia called its first time out of the game at 4:45. Before the buzzer of the first quarter, Olympia put in one more 3 and IVC edged up five more points to make it 15-7 going into the second. “They shoot the ball really well, especially the 3. I knew they could shoot it,” said Mintus. In the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, senior Ryan Beard put in a basket under the net after quick passing in the lane by Schaub and senior Mitch McIntyre. Schaub was able to make a drive down for two points and another two to make it 21-7 when the Spartans called another timeout at 6:40. Olympia came out of the timeout aggressive and a minute later the Spartan’s junior Ashton Beachy sank a 3. Beard answered back with a quick two points, but Olympia’s Ethan Schmidgall put in a layup and was granted the and-1, which he made at 4:53. With four minutes to go before the intermission, senior Ben Rashid made a steal and drove down the court for a layup to make it 27-16 when Olympia called its third timeout in the first half at 3:02. Stribling was able to put in two more 3’s for the Spartans before the buzzer and junior Matt Keffeler and Rashid put up two points apiece to make it 31-22. The third started with offensive drives by both teams in the first minute but could not make anything of it until Schaub had a look at a 3 and sank it to start the scoring. Owens went to the free-throw line at 5:02 to make one of the two attempts to make it 35-24. Beard and McIntyre put in two points apiece from the paint to contribute. McIntyre closed the scoring for the third with another two points from under the hoop to make it 46-28 at the end of the third. IVC grabbed its game-high lead in the fourth quarter after senior Spencer Youngman opened the scoring with two points from the paint with an assist by Rashid to bring the spread to 20 at 48-28. Olympia answered back in the next two minutes with three 3’s from across the court to narrow the lead to 50-39 before Mintus called IVC’s first timeout at 4:11. Olympia put the Grey Ghosts into bonus after the Spartans racked up six additional fouls in the fourth quarter alone. Owens was able to get four of his five attempts from the bonus in to finish the scoring and contribute to the victory. Schaub led the Grey Ghosts in scoring with 21 points. Owens had 13, Beard and McIntyre had 6. IVC advanced to face Champaign St. Thomas More after its victory over Peoria Christian Thursday.
