The last regular season games ended for the IVC volleyball team at the Quincy Notre Dame tournament this weekend. IVC traveled down state for the two-day event where they won two of the five games played. “I think it was a good learning experience for us,” said head coach Hillary Haen. “We’re still trying to figure out how to play against teams that are equal to us or better than us.” First, the Lady Grey Ghosts went up against Jacksonville High School for a 20-25, 19-25 loss. “We just kept putting ourselves in these situations that we shouldn’t have gotten into,” Haen said. The next two games resulted in wins for IVC. Against Unity, the Ghosts took a 26-24, 25-16 victory. The match against Jacksonville Routt ended with a 25-13, 25-17 win. Hannah Scherer had four aces, seven kills and two blocks against Routt, Brooke Ratcliff ended it with 17 assists and Erika Koch was marked down for two blocks. The third game played against Danville Schlarman gave IVC a 9-25, 23-25 loss. IVC’s last game against Liberty resulted in a three set loss of 25-21, 21-25, 13-15. “It was another game that was close at the end. It felt good as it got to the end but we didn’t need to put ourselves in that position,” Haen said. Ratcliff ended the weekend with 68 assists recorded. Scherer finished with 11 aces and 25 kills and Koch had 16 kills and 17 blocks. Megan Connor finished the tournament with 14 digs. The Lady Grey Ghosts are going into post-season play with a 24-7 record and a No. 1 seed in the Monmouth Regional. IVC will play against the winner of the Geneseo and Galesburg game from Monday. “It’s awesome. It puts us in a good situation to play teams that are a lower seed than us,” Haen said. “It was fun to see the fruits of their work this year to put them in a No. 1 seed.” In the 2012 season IVC made it to the regional finals but lost to Dunlap 25-20,25-10. The Lady Grey Ghosts lost again to Dunlap in 2011 in the regional semifinals 25-23, 25-18. The team did make it to the championship match at regionals but lost to Bloomington Central Catholic, 25-23, 25-19.
