The Lady Grey Ghost runners are heading to sectionals after placing third in the Manlius Regional meet Oct. 26. Kewanee and Rock Falls took first and second place finishings and Manlius, Amboy, Princeville and Prophetstown followed after IVC to advance as well. “(The race) went good,” said coach Dennis Fraikes. “I was happy with how we ran.” Fraikes is in his second year of coaching after being an assistant coach for the cross country teams. IVC’s top-three finishers were freshman coming in at the top-20. Katherine Schneider led the runners for fifth place in 20:01. Molly Prewitt finished at 17th place in 21:39 and close behind was Camren Magee at 20th place in 22 minutes even. Junior Molly Wang ran the course in 22:14 for 22nd place and timed last for the team score was sophomore Cheyenne Featherstone at 42nd place in 23:44. Coming in sixth and seventh place for IVC were junior Erica Larson at 46th place in 23:52 and sophomore Cora Habeger at 55th place in 24:53. After taking third place, the girls advanced to the Oregon sectionals along with qualifying teams from the Winnebago and Seneca regional meets. “We have a legitimate chance at a top 10 placing at sectional,” Fraikes said. From the Winnebago regional, runners were breaking into the 16-minute barrier and the Byron team had all runners under 20 minutes. “Our sectional is loaded. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had two teams from our sectional place in the top five at state,” Fraikes said. The boy’s team had five runners appear but Spencer Delaware’s hip injury from last year in track was acting up and the coaches did not want to risk further injury. The other four still competed individually but did not make the qualifying time. Sophomore Ethan Sutherland lead the boys at 46th place in 19:27.1. Senior Anton Sturgeon followed up 66th place in 21:39.9 and sophomore Daniel Merdian was right behind at 69th place in 22:13.9. Freshman Caleb Adcock closed up for the boys at 72nd place in 24:17. Last year, the boys ran for seventh place out of 10 in the Rock Falls regional but did not make it to sectionals. The last time the boy’s team made it to sectionals was in 2010 when David Weber lead the team to place fourth at the Eureka regionals. Neither the team nor Weber advanced to state. The girl’s team will start the sectional race at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oregon Park — West.
