Police found the body of a woman in her Far North Peoria home Thursday after responding to a call of a possible burglary.
About 3:40 p.m., police went to 700 W. Mossville Road to investigate a possible break-in.
When officers arrived, they found Denise Leuthold, 39, dead inside, according to Peoria police and Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll.
Leuthold was the victim of an apparent shooting, which police are investigating as a homicide.
A family member made the initial 911 call and reported a burglary.
She was living at the address with her husband, three children and parents, Ingersoll said.
Authorities encouraged residents not to panic but exercise caution. No suspect was identified in the incident.
“Lock your doors. Lock your windows,” Settingsgaard said. “Pay attention to strangers in your area or strange cars.”
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.
Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the Peoria Police Department at 673-4521 or CrimeStoppers at 673-9000.
This is the second homicide of the year in Peoria. Heather Malcolm, 31, of 707 E. Nebraska Ave. was fatally shot late Sunday. Her husband, Matthew Malcolm, 30, has been charged with murder in the case.
