Illinois Valley Central's wrestling team's season ended for the team as a whole Saturday but not for two individuals.
"I thought we wrestled pretty good at Regionals," coach Matt Russell said. "To get two champs is a great thing. We would have like to advance a few more to Sectionals, but it was a very tough Regional."
Sophomores Riley Beard and Jordan Ladd earned a trip to Sectional by winning at the Pontiac Regional Saturday.
"We had a good year," Russell said. "We finished 15-14 in duals. There were ups and downs this year but it has been an enjoyable group to work with."
The team finished seventh out of nine teams overall with 70 points.
Beard won the 126-lbs. division on a 9-6 decision.
In the championship match, Beard built an early lead and established himself as the dominant wrestler before his foe scored a few late points to make the match appear closer than it really was.
Ladd and his opponent matched each other point for point and, after the end of three rounds found himself in a tie.
In overtime, Ladd found the move he needed to put himself on the right side of a 5-4 decision.
Nic Norris had a chance to extend his season but fell in the third-place match of the 106-lbs. division on a 2-1 decision.
"As always, we need to get into the weight room in the off season and get stronger," Russell said. "I would also like to see the guys go out for other sports to stay in a competitive situation."
Beard and Ladd next wrestle in the Rochelle Sectional with times to be announced.
"We need to stay healthy this week and go into Rochelle with the attitude that there is no tomorrow," Russell said. "Rochelle may be the toughest AA Sectional in the State."
