The annual Balloons at the Park, a hot-air balloon race and festival has been canceled in part because of a drop in sponsorships from the first year.

The event was scheduled for July 20 and 21 at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe.

After close to a year in planning, the producers of the Balloons at the Park Open Illinois Midwest Championship Hot Air Balloon Races and Festival said “it is with deep regret that we are canceling the event for 2012,” according to a joint press release from R&B Productions Inc. of Peoria, Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, and Beyond Inc., of Olathe, Kan.

All deposits and sponsorship funds will be returned to the participating companies, according to the release.

Sponsorship dropped 60 percent from the 2011 two-day event. Organizers also faced the cancellation of “new and major attractions” that were not described in the news release.

“Evaluations for future Balloons at the Park events will be made in the next few months for 2013,” the news release said.
