The Chillicothe Skatepark was closed Thursday due to an incident over one youth using too much skateboard wax.

A 13-year-old Chillicothe male reported two Lacon males, ages 19 and 21, beat him up. He said the 19-year old pushed him down at the top of a ramp at the park, located at 500 W. Moffitt St., and told him to “lick it up,” referring to the wax he had used, according to a Chillicothe police report.

He then allegedly hit him on the back of the head with a skateboard, and when he got up, he shoved him back down again. He fell down nine steps. The youth left the park on his bike, but the 21-year-old followed him. He allegedly kicked his bike and caused him to fall. The chain came off his bike.

When he returned home, his mother called the police. No marks could be found on him at the time, but he reported his head hurt. Witnesses confirmed seeing some of what happened.

The 19-and 21-year-old Lacon males were questioned by the police. The 21-year-old said some youth at the park were making fun of the Chillicothe youth in question. He described someone else as shoving the youth to the ground, and the 19-year-old stopping a fight. They were released, but the report was sent to the state’s attorney’s office.

Chillicothe Park District Director of Parks and Recreation Kevin Yates said he was notified by police personnel that a “big fight” had happened. He was asked to close the park, which he did by having a maintenance worker lock up the
area.

“The responding police officer thought it was better to let cooler heads prevail and clear out the park,” said Yates.

The park reopened Friday morning after park officials scraped off what they could of the wax.

Yates said officials are evaluating the use of wax and what would be the best policy for all of the park’s users, which includes both skateboards and BMX bikes.
