The Chillicothe Shademakers Beautification Board will host its annual Arbor Day event at the city median in front of Geiger True Value hardware store at 1 p.m. Saturday. Normally the volunteer group, which beautifies city owned areas around town, plant at least one tree. This year the tree planting will come a little later in the year at Cutright (River) Park.

Instead of a tree planting, local children will help plant the dusty miller needed to make a Grey Ghost in the city median. The group is working on the second phase of the median, begun last fall when the IVC Grey Ghost, carved by chainsaw artist Tim Gill was unveiled. Saturday’s participants are asked to meet across the railroad tracks in the southwest corner of the city's parking lot. Parents are asked to pre-register their children at Geiger.

Scouts from Pack 91 will conduct a flag ceremony. Refreshments will be served. A flower, donated by Picket Fence, will be given to each participant. Those who pre-register will receive a treat bag, which contains recycled items as well as items made from plants or trees, the day of the event.

Why you should attend
“Earth Day/ Arbor Day is this week. We want the kids to be aware and embrace it. It’s a good example of environmentalism, volunteerism and community involvement. Come plant the Ghost and take one to plant at home. — Trish Connor, chairwoman of the Shademakers/Beautification Board
