A Chillicothe man who was collecting trash from rural Princeville homes died Tuesday from blunt force injuries to his legs after he was run over by his truck, an autopsy found.

Harvey D. Smith, 51, of 1404 N. Finney St. was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m. April 24 outside 11008 Mendell Road.

Two people walking on the road heard Smith call out to them from a ditch and they called 911 shortly before 9 a.m.
Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Smith’s condition deteriorated while paramedics were on the way, and he was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m. at the scene.

He had been retrieving refuse as part of his job with PDC Wigand Disposal Co. when the truck rolled over him while he was behind it. He had been working his route alone.

The incident left him with lacerations to the soft tissue of his legs, as well as severed blood vessels and fractures to bone, the autopsy, performed April 25, showed.

Smith is survived by his wife, Natalie, and son, Mathias.
