  • Two big changes were approved Tuesday night at the Illinois Valley Central Board of Education meeting.
The proposed drug testing policy was approved to go into effect next year by a 7-0 vote.
Before the vote was held, eight parents spoke against it while one was for it. Superintendent Dr. Nick Polyak also presented the board with a petition given to him with 109 signatures for the policy earlier in the meeting.
Mike Denzer, Steve Nalley, Steve Garrison, Donna Uebler and Sarah Williamson also spoke about the policy before the vote.
“We are raising the bar by expecting, not asking or hoping, students remain drug-free,” Garrison said.
Also approved by a 7-0 vote was the acceptance of the invitation from the West Central Conference to join the conference for football during the 2013-14 school year.
IVC High School football will remain with the Mid-State 6 for football next year and in the NCIC for all other sports.
“We understand that we need a conference home for our football program,” Polyak said in a press release. “Unlike other sports programs, it is nearly impossible to exist as an independent football school. Our goal remains to make the best possible decisions for our students, school and community.”
Other schools in the West Central Conference include Illini West, Macomb, Monmouth-Roseville, Pittsfield, Quincy Notre Dame and West Hancock.
