The Everyday Leadership Class at Illinois Valley Central High School is working on its newest project — raising funds for a new scholarship to honor the late Josh Pilger. Pilger was an IVC senior who battled cancer in the fall and died Dec. 29.
The scholarship will be awarded to a senior who exemplifies Josh’s attributes, including community or charity service and courage to overcome adversity. No academic requirements are required. Financial need will be considered. The amount of the scholarship is dependent on how much money is raised, and organizers plan to give out the scholarship annually.
To raise the funds for the scholarship, the IVC students are planning an evening of basketball fun, courtesy of some game teachers and students. In Game 1, the Chillicothe Elementary Center and South School faculty will take on the Mossville faculty. Game 2 offers IVC students a chance to compete against those in their building as they take on the IVC faculty.
The games are not the only fun to be had at the event. A half-time cheerleading routing by the IVC faculty may please the crowd, which is expected to be better than their last performance raising money for the USO. Children’s activities are planned to keep the younger students busy on the balcony. Concessions will be available. Lime green T-shirts will be for sale for $10 while supplies last. They have a giant “JP” — standing for Josh’s initials — on the back.
Why you should attend
“Josh meant a lot to the community. This is a chance to honor him. The scholarship gives us a way to honor him and to continue on into the future.” — Mark Kosinski, IVC Everyday Leadership Class teacher
