Illinois Valley Central’s Laura Hedden competed in the 38th Amateur Athletic Union Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championship.

Hedden’s team, the EastSide Centre’s 16U travel team, won nine of 12 matches and 20 of 31 sets.

The team, which lacked consistency throughout the season, found it in the tournament.

After losing to Top Select of Florida in three sets in pool play, EastSide faced the team again for a berth in the championship.

Top Select took the first set, 27-25, but EastSide bounced back with 25-19 and 15-8 victories to earn a spot in the championship game against North Carolina Elite.

The team lost to Elite in two sets, 25-17 and 25-22 to finish second in the tournament.

Hedden helped the team with 73 kills in 167 attempts and a kill average of plus .281 and 5.6 kills per match.
