Harry J. Baer, 92, of Banner died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1918, the son of William and Lillian (Mercer) Baer. He married Ruby A.
Paulson who preceded him in death in 1989 and then he married Marian Owens in 1992. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Will (Barb) Baer of Chillicothe, Ross Baer of Edelstein and Ken (Sharon) Baer of Metamora; stepchildren, Gloria Barnhill, Patricia (William) Nelson, Barbara Turner, Diana Hicks and Gerald Owens; 16 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers and one great grandson.

He worked at Caterpillar Inc. in Mossville for 37 years, retiring as Superintendent of Material Control.

He served in the U.S. Army, World War II in Germany, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a lifetime outdoorsman with a passion for fishing, hunting and golfing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe. The Rev. Bobby Barnhill will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens with Military Rites.
