Have you noticed a new feature on our websites called “Morning Minutes?”

It’s a feature from our parent company, GateHouse Media, and I love it.

Yes, I know I’m biased, but I really do enjoy getting my cup of coffee, logging onto my computer and reading Morning Minutes when I get to work each day.

It’s a short little read and has a “word of the day.” Being a journalist, I like expanding my vocabulary. The other day I discovered that I am chary.
That’s one of the new words I learned.

Chary means “discreetly cautious; hesitant and vigilant about dangers and risks; slow to grant, accept or expend.”

There is also a “website of the day.” The websites are definitely unique — some more than others, depending on your interests. The one for July 29 was about Pink’s Hot Dogs, and was posted to celebrate National Chili Dog Day.

Did you know it was National Chili Dog Day July 29? Nope. I didn’t either.

Then, there is a “number to know” which lists some random tidbit with a number. I like random tidbits. They are good conversation starters. So, tonight over dinner I can ask my boyfriend, “Did you know that about 20 billion hot dogs are eaten by Americans each year?”

“This day in history” is along the same line as the “number to know.”
It is interesting to read about what happened in the past — what was significant about this day today.

Did you know that on July 30, 1975, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, at about 2:30 p.m. He was never seen or heard from again.

That is an interesting topic to me. In fact, I would like to learn more. Perhaps I will buy a book on this topic. I love mysteries.

A featured birthday is given as well as my favorite, a “daily quote,” which I will leave you with.

“Have a sense of humor about life — you will need it. And be courteous.” - Peter Jennings, who was born on this date in 1938.
