The Chillicothe Barbarians finished the regular season undefeated May 15 when the beat a team from Springfield at home.

The Barbarians are ranked No.1 in their league, the Downstate League, with Metamora second.

“This year’s team have enthusiastically embraced the sport. They are challenged at every game and every practice to push themselves longer and harder than most have gone before,” said Coach Laurence Hornibrook.

“We run over 7 miles together before we practice and then go through each aspect of the game to ensure each player fully grasps the safety aspects of the game and how to play the game properly. I am very proud of the guys and can see them improve in their understanding and appreciation of the game as each week passes.”

The team began the playoffs Saturday at Detweiller Park. The top two teams from Saturday’s playoffs will go on to play in the Tier III Championship game in Chicago on Memorial Day.

“As a coach, I have been very pleased with the support we have received from the community,” Hornibrook said. “From the district administration, to the parents, to other high school students, we have all seen a growth in this support throughout the season, and I feel this support has helped our club be as successful as they have been.”
