Lady Ghosts bounce back with three wins

After a disappointing previous week, the Lady Ghost soccer team rebounded with three wins last week.

Illinois Valley Central started out the week by playing Limestone April 20.

Under bad weather conditions, the Ghosts outplayed the Rockets and were led by two first-half goals.

Senior Jessica Strong scored the Ghosts’ first goal, and senior Sarah Wadi scored the second.

Although the Rockets also put up one goal in the first, IVC went on to win, 2-1.

“That was a tough match up,” coach Pat Sell said. “The weather was bad and so the game was sloppy.”

IVC took on Streator April 21 at home.

The Ghosts struck first, with Strong scoring a goal off an assist by sophomore Lindsay Gaskins.

Streator took the lead in the second half when they scored two consecutive goals.

The Ghosts then tied the game off a penalty kick by junior Emily Motteler.

The game ended in a tie, but IVC won the game by winning the tie breaking penalty kickoff, 4-3.

“I think mentally we started the game well and dominated play on the field, but didn’t put the ball in the net enough,” Sell said. “I think in the end, though, we wanted the win more.”

On Thursday, the Ghosts traveled to East Peoria for a showdown with the Lady Raiders.

IVC jumped on the board first, with an unassisted goal by junior Marci Furuholmen.

East Peoria then immediately tied the game on a goal of their own.

Strong then took the lead back for the Ghosts, and junior Kelsey Brooke added an insurance goal.

Neither team would score in the second period, and IVC won the game, 3-1.

“We were really happy with that game,” Sell said. “To play the way we did and get a win was really big for us.”

The Ghosts (5-4, 2-1) are scheduled to play at 8 a.m. Saturday at Orion in the Orion Girls Soccer Tournament.
