The Chillicothe Shademakers/Beautification Board annually recognizes residents and businesses who keep their yards not only appealing to themselves, but also to the community at large.

For that, each property owner should be commended.

For far too many years, some properties in Chillicothe have remained wastelands of garbage, rodents, high weeds, holes in the ground and clutter resembling a junkyard.

Lacking curb appeal is the least of some of these properties' problems.

Either the lack of finances or care by their owners leave other residents wondering not only what is wrong with the owner, but also why city officials have not insisted that change must be made.

Now residents may call Chillicothe City Hall and voice a complaint of a specific address, with the property maintenance committee obliged to follow up on the complaint.

One by one, Chillicothe's trouble spots can be rectified.

Don't be afraid to make a complaint, which encourages city officials, in turn, to encourage property owners to do what they know they should.
